Home Care: Local, Support Services Help Elderly Remain Where Their Memories Are

October 23, 2015

One of the best things about living in our area is the sheer number of wonderful, disability support services on offer for seniors and their families. As long-time members of the home care community, we’ve had the pleasure of getting to know about many of them. And we’ve helped some of our clients and professional caregivers take advantage of those services too.

It All Starts With a Conversation

Before we start delivering home care services, all of our clients meet with a care coordinator or registered nurse to discuss a number of things. During the course of that interview, we’ll discover which types of services are needed and make recommendations on how the family may go about receiving them. For example, in some instances, we may learn that the client’s home is unsafe and in need of critical modifications (e.g. wheelchair ramps).

Tapping into Resources for the Home

Disabled seniors living in our area have several low-cost ways to modify their homes. For instance, they may apply for an owner occupant loan through the local Property Rehabilitation Program. They could also reach out to organizations like Rebuilding Together® or take advantage of the United States Department of Agriculture’s Section 504 Home Repair Program, just to name a few. And if disabled residents need items other than wheelchair ramps, they may benefit from other programs too.

The long list of disability support services includes, but is not limited to Medicare assistive technology assistance, MedicaidHCBS Waivers and assorted Veterans programs. Oftentimes, they’ll help seniors pay for walkers, shower chairs, hospital beds and other items geared towards keeping disabled individuals safe. Of course there is usually some paperwork involved and there are people available that can help residents complete the forms.
