Home Matters Supports the University of Oregon Study

December 13, 2023
University of Orego

Researchers at University of Oregon (UO) are seeking volunteers for an anonymous online survey exploring the needs of people caring for a family member with dementia. Participants may not benefit directly from taking the survey, but they would be contributing to research aimed at reducing caregiver burden.

You may be eligible for this study if you:

  • Are an unpaid family caregiver for someone with dementia
  • Have been caregiving for at least 2 months
  • Live at home with the care recipient
  • Are 18 years or older

Participants will:

  • Complete a 30-minute survey
  • Receive a $40 gift card

This research study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) explores the influence of swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) on caregiver burden, although you do not need to be experiencing any swallowing difficulties to participate. This research comes from UO’s Optimizing Swallowing and Eating for the Elderly (O-SEE) Lab led by Samantha Shune, PhD, Associate Professor and Director of Communication Disorders and Sciences.

“Our long-term goal is to develop an intervention to reduce the burden of dysphagia-related care… to improve caregiver and care recipient health and quality of life,” said Dr. Shune.
