Marilyn

Marilyn was born in Columbus, Ohio, in 1931. Marilyn’s sister and brother-in-law moved to Oregon and, after they moved, Marilyn came to Oregon frequently to visit them. On one visit, Marilyn’s sister Ruthie set her up on a blind date with Ronald Christie. Marilyn’s sister told her that Ron was really cute and he had even modeled for Meier and Frank. They hit it off and began dating long distance. After dating for a while, Ron proposed to Marilyn during a visit over dinner. She told him she needed some time to think before she said yes, so she returned to Columbus. After a few weeks, she called Ron and asked when he was coming to visit her, and in the course of the conversation accepted his proposal. Marilyn and Ron exchanged many letters during their courtship and she even received her engagement ring via mail. They were married on January 15th, 1955.

After Ron and Marilyn married they moved to Oregon, where they welcomed two children, Mark and Nancy. Nancy was born on their third wedding anniversary. Ron worked as a traveling salesman and Marilyn worked with Kelly temporary services. They had a great life together and now there are seven grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

Ron and Marilyn were married for 47 years, before Ron passed away in his early 70s. After he passed, Marilyn continued to live an active life and joined a dragon boat racing team for cancer survivors called Wasabi Soar. Marilyn raced with her team for many years and was even able to travel for her racing. She was able to go on many trips but some of the most memorable were Vancouver, Canada, Victoria Canada, and Australia. She was also part of a Portland to Coast walking team and continued to volunteer after she was no longer up for the long walks in the relay.

Marilyn continues to stay active and enjoys going for walks with her caregivers. When asked about her advice for younger generations Marilyn said, “Work hard and play hard, and love what you do!”
