Tom was born on May 29, 1940, in Eugene, Oregon, where he lived through the end of high school. Fun fact: he played high school basketball with Neil Goldschmidt, who later served as Governor of Oregon from 1987 to 1991.
Donna was born on July 3, 1940, in Portland, Oregon, where she has lived for most of her life. She attended Grant High School. Tom and Donna were married on August 18, 1962—63 years ago! They have lived in only two houses together: the first for 20 years and their current home for the past 40 years. Tom worked as an engineer, and Donna worked in the medical field doing lab work and X-rays. They have two children, Scott and Deanna.
Tom’s first childhood memory is from when he was five years old. While fishing with his family, he got a fishhook stuck in his finger. He was taken to the nearest hospital, where they had to remove it without any numbig medication because there was no doctor on duty at the time.
Donna’s earliest and favorite childhood memories are of visiting her grandparents’ dairy farm in Rainier with her brother.
Tom’s favorite holiday is Labor Day because of all the memories of spending time there with Donna and taking their kids along each year. Donna’s favorite holiday is Christmas—she has always loved going above and beyond to make it special for everyone.
Their favorite hobbies together include hiking, fishing, rock hunting, watching wildlife, camping—really anything that lets them enjoy the outdoors!
Their advice to younger generations is simple but meaningful: appreciate the small things and never take them for granted. And as Donna says, “Take that trip you’ve always wanted to go on!”
They enjoy working with HMC because, as Tom puts it, “They listen. Most people these days don’t take the time to truly listen—they just try to rush everything along. But HMC takes the time to hear the whole story and show that they genuinely care.”
