A Testament to Our Commitment and Resilience
At Home Matters, we believe that exceptional care goes beyond routine services. It involves unwavering support, proactive planning, and a commitment to our clients and caregivers, no matter the circumstances. Hurricane Beryl may have tested us, but it also highlighted the strength, resilience, and unity of our team. We are proud to have weathered this storm together and remain dedicated to providing the highest level of care to our community.
Proactive Planning and Leadership
When Hurricane Beryl threatened our community, our Vanessa Lusk, our Executive Administrator, and her leadership team took swift action by preparing a comprehensive hurricane plan. We contacted each of our clients and caregivers to inform them that services may be temporarily halted on Monday due to the impending storm. Despite this, a few clients with high levels of personal need continued to receive care even during the hurricane. We also prioritized the safety of our caregivers, ensuring they could stay home with their families by pausing services on Monday and resuming on Tuesday. This proactive communication and planning ensured everyone was aware of the situation and prepared for what lay ahead.
Effective Communication and Coordination
Throughout the hurricane, our leadership maintained constant communication with both clients and caregivers. We provided updates about the storm, informed everyone about the pause and resumption of services, and, most importantly, checked in on everyone’s well-being. This ongoing communication ensured that everyone felt supported and informed during a time of uncertainty.
Caring for Those with High Needs
While most clients’ services were paused during the hurricane, our leadership team identified a few that should not go without care. For Instance, we have a client who receives 12 hours of care per day. While his wife is in good health, she cannot physically meet the demands of caring for her husband alone. Since this client’s shift coincided with the hurricane, we arranged for a caregiver to come to their home the night before, help with preparations, and stay overnight with the family. The caregiver then provided care throughout the day of the hurricane and left after their shift was over, spending a total of 24 hours with the family. This ensured continuous care and comfort for this couple during what could have been a very scary and stressful time.
Stories of Dedication
The dedication of our caregivers during this challenging time has been nothing short of inspiring. Our carriers answered the call to resume services and immediately return to caring for our clients the day after the storm.
One of our caregivers faced extensive damage to her home when a tree fell on it, causing flooding and significant structural issues. Despite dealing with the aftermath and the ongoing rebuild of her home, she did not miss a single shift. Her commitment to her clients, even in the face of personal hardship, embodies the spirit of Home Matters.
Losing power at our office and her home did not stop Vanessa Lusk, our Executive Administrator, from checking in on clients and caregivers. Working from only her phone, and having to charge it in her car, Vanessa was able to keep tabs on the needs of our clients and availability of our caregivers after the storm. We’re extremely grateful and proud of Vanessa for her ability to manage the operations of our office while also working to regain normalcy at her own home. It was as if she said, “What hurricane?” and kept her usual high level of professionalism for all of our clients and caregivers to draw from. Her calming influence was a big factor in our ability to maintain high levels of care throughout the week.
Heartfelt Feedback from Clients and Families
The feedback we received from clients and their families has been incredibly rewarding. We’ve been inundated with calls, texts, and emails expressing gratitude for our swift response and the care provided to their loved ones. Some former clients’ families even reached out, asking us to check on their family members to ensure they had power, food, and water. Being able to offer this additional support was truly gratifying for our entire team.
Strengthening Bonds and Learning Lessons
This experience has undeniably strengthened our team. By providing support to each other and maintaining consistent communication with caregivers and clients, we’ve fortified our bonds and demonstrated our commitment to meeting the needs of those we serve. The challenges posed by Hurricane Beryl have taught us valuable lessons and reinforced our dedication to continuous improvement in disaster response.
Even during an impending possible disaster to our community, Home Matters Caregiving rose to the occasion, showcasing our unwavering dedication to our clients, caregivers, and the community. Hurricane Beryl tested our strength, but it also revealed the remarkable resilience and commitment of our entire team.
